NEW EDITION COMMENTARY
Exorcism comes from the Greek word orkizo, which mean to bind by oath. You may notice that we use this word orkizo to summon the guardians in the Sphere of Hekas ritual in chapter 2. People tend to think that evocation, the summoning of spirits to appear before you, and exorcism, the forced expelling of spirits from a person or place, are opposites, but they aren't. They are done through the same process: binding the spirit by oath.
To do this you need to possess the spiritual authority to command a spirit. This can be authority vested in you through initiation or consecration, it can be accomplished through making strong allies or resonance with a power that you can call upon, or rarely it can be earned through your own spiritual work and transformation. You are, after all, a spirit.
Some attempt to invoke this authority ritually just before an operation, and this can work, but it's not ideal. If you are entering into a confrontation with a spirit, you should have something more solid behind you than a single ritual invocation declaring yourself to be Moses or visualizing yourself in a God-Form for the first time.
Some readers were confused at my decision not to include an exorcism script with this chapter. After all, at the end of this book I teach bindings, confusion spells, and expelling rites that some would classify as curses, so why am I shy about encouraging exorcisms?
I am not worried about you hurting yourself, or someone that you are in a confrontation with. I am worried about people picking up this book, or books like it, and attempting to exorcise patients and clients and making things worse. A lot of people have been killed or seriously injured during âexorcismsâ carried out by the ill-prepared or ill-intentioned upon clients that are at their most vulnerable point. I don't mean to be overly negative, but the readers and students that have lobbied me the hardest to provide exorcisms are often those I would least trust to perform one. Too many people are far too eager to hang out a sign and play out their fantasies of fighting evil with magick.
Still, it is perhaps a failure of the book to not provide an example to work from, so now there is a Hekatean exorcism in the appendixes that you can use as it is written or as a base for longer exorcisms of your own.
Realize this: exorcism is a confrontation. There is always pushback. If all you have known of magick is casting spells that either work or don't work, or prayers that you assume reach a God or Goddess that is more than capable of handling anything and everything, you might find yourself shocked at just how much a spirit is able to push back. You can go in with all your rituals thinking you have a solid plan of how it's going to turn out, but that usually gets thrown out the window as soon as things get real.
